  9. When the Hubble Space Telescope was put into orbit in 1990, the Space Shuttle brought it to its new home in space. Once the telescope was in orbit, astronomers were horrified to discover that it wasn├òt working properly. The Space Shuttle was sent up with a repair crew to fix the problem. Without the Shuttle and its crew, the $1.5-billion telescope would have been useless. Since then, astronomers down on Earth have used the Hubble Space Telescope to learn a great deal about our own solar system as well as distant galaxies and star clusters.
